On the other hand, migraines are a whole different beast. They’re severe headaches that can cause throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head, accompanied by a slew of other symptoms – the kind that leaves you thinking, “Why me?”

I don’t know about you, but in my case, a migraine attack makes me nauseated, extremely sensitive to light, and suffering from so much pain I need help to even crawl out of bed.

Common causes and triggers of headaches and migraines

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to why headaches and migraines occur, as the triggers can vary significantly from person to person – and heredity probably plays a part. Some common culprits include stress, lack or an excess of sleep, dehydration, and even certain foods. Identifying your unique triggers can be quite the detective work, but it’s a crucial step in managing your pain. If you’re looking for ideas, Dr. Mikao Usui, the Father of Reiki, suggested two things that could often prevent the more garden-variety type of headaches:

  • Stay hydrated – Because dehydration can be a common cause of headaches, drinking one or two glasses of water could help alleviate pain.
  • Check your posture – Bad posture can also cause headaches, so correcting your posture may help prevent future headaches. This is particularly true for people working in front of computers for long hours each day.

Common symptoms of headaches and migraines

We’ve all been there: the pulsating pain, the sensitivity to light and sound, the nausea, and the desperate longing for relief. Migraines can also cause visual disturbances, known as auras, making it even harder to function. It’s a rough ride, no doubt about it.

If, like me, you’ve tried it all – over-the-counter medications, stronger prescription meds, taking a shower or a long bath, sleeping more or sleeping less, changing your pillows and even your mattress, and so much more – and you’re feeling hopeless and resigned to living a life of pain, why not try Reiki?

It’s a healing art that taps into your body’s energy flow to promote balance, alleviate pain, and ultimately, improve your quality of life. And, quite frankly, one of two things that helped alleviate my pain.

I started doing daily Reiki self-treatments fairly recently, and I haven’t had a headache or even a migraine attack since (Don’t ask me why it took me so long; life got in the way, disaster struck, and I completely forgot that I could use Reiki for headaches and migraines). Reiki for headache and migraines: Points and symbols

If you’re dealing with persistent headaches and migraines and have tried various treatments without success, Reiki could be the answer you’ve been searching for. Let’s dive into the key points and symbols that can be used for optimal relief during a Reiki session.

Reiki points for headache relief

Reiki points are specific spots on the body where energy can become blocked. During a Reiki session, a practitioner focuses on these areas to help release stagnant energy and promote healing. Important Reiki points for headaches include the temples, forehead, jaw, and the base of the skull.

Note: Reiki energy becomes more potent once you've received an attunement. Picture yourself as a river, with Reiki energy being the water flowing through it. Before your attunement, you're like a dammed river with restricted energy flow. After the attunement, you become a free-flowing river, allowing energy to move through you with ease and power. If you’re experiencing chronic headaches and migraine attacks, consider studying Reiki up to at least Level I, and receiving an attunement yourself. Daily self-treatment can amplify sessions delivered by a qualified Reiki practitioner. 

Reiki practitioners target specific points on the body to help relieve pain and discomfort. Dr. Usui focused on the temples and other points in the head, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi emphasized the front of the jaw, temples, back of the head and neck, and the top of the head, while Mrs. Hawayo Takata recommended treating the stomach and kidneys for migraines.

Third eye point

This point is in the middle of the forehead, just above the space between the eyebrows. During a Reiki session, a practitioner may focus on this area to help alleviate tension headaches and promote mental clarity.


The temples are found on either side of the head, near the outer edge of the eyebrows, and often hold tension. Reiki practitioners place their hands on this area to help release blockages, ease pain and promote relaxation. 

Crown chakra

Located at the top of the head, the Crown Chakra is the seventh primary chakra in the body. When Reiki energy is focused on this point, it can help balance the chakra and potentially decrease headaches.

The base of the skull

This area, where the head meets the neck, is another key area where tension accumulates and, therefore, a crucial point for headache relief. During a Reiki session, concentrating on this region can help release tension, clear any energy blockages, and alleviate pain from headaches and migraines.


While Dr. Hayahi recommended hands be placed on the front of the jaw for headache relief, I find that placing my hands on the side – right where the rami are – is far more effective. This is possibly because I grind my teeth when stressed out (even, and especially, when asleep); because I have anxiety, I get stressed out often. Apparently, this is very common, with “a full 60 percent of adults exhibiting some amount of rhythmic movement and muscle contractions in their jaws during sleep, studies show.

Mrs. Takata’s recommendation to treat the stomach area for headache relief might be connected to the solar plexus chakra, which governs personal power and emotional balance. A practitioner may focus on this area during a Reiki session to help release pent-up stress, improve low self-esteem, and clear any energy blockages, which are common headache triggers.


The kidneys play a vital role in detoxifying the body. Channeling healing energy to these organs can support their function and help eliminate toxins that may contribute to headaches.

By targeting these specific Reiki points, practitioners can help alleviate headache pain and promote overall relaxation and well-being. As a potential client, it’s important to approach Reiki healing with an open mind and trust in the process to guide you toward relief.

Reiki symbols for migraine relief

Reiki symbols act as keys that unlock specific healing energies. For migraine relief, the Sei Hei Ki (SHK) symbol placed between two Cho Ku Rei (CKR) symbols is particularly effective. This combination, referred to as a Reiki sandwich, amplifies the healing power of Reiki (CKR) to ease the stress caused by mental and emotional imbalances. A practitioner may draw this Reiki sandwich over your head or on their palms before or during a session to enhance effectiveness.

If you’ve tried over-the-counter medication, prescription medication, acupuncture, massages, and other methods to alleviate headache and migraine pain, it’s understandable that you might feel frustrated, exhausted, and hopeless.
